A Little About Us

The Haven is a local non-profit agency that provides emergency temporary shelter and services to victims of family violence and sexual assault.

The Haven is dual-programmed and has two emergency facilities: The Battered Women’s Shelter, which serves victims of family violence, and the Rape Crisis Center, which serves victims of sexual assault.

Both programs have a 24-hour toll-free crisis line, staffed by trained personnel, that is available to anyone wishing to utilize the emergency facilities or the Outreach Programs.

Both programs serve nine counties in South Georgia, including Lowndes, Brooks, Colquitt, Echols, Berrien, Cook, Lanier, Clinch and Atkinson.

Our History

In December of 1985, two women representing Levi-Strauss Foundation approached the senior advocate at the Victim-Witness Assistance Program in the District Attorney’s office and offered to help fund a program which was to include a temporary emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence.

Levi-Strauss is one of the largest employees in the area. Its philanthropic efforts in the community have played an important role in a variety of local programs and services. Jeanette Coody, of Levi-Strauss, spearheaded the Corporation’s initial commitment and worked for twelve years to support The Haven and to improve local services to battered women and children.

Under the guidance of Harvey Yellin, the Victim-Witness Assistance Program’s senior advocate, a Battered Women’s Task Force was formed in October of 1986 and the planning of an emergency shelter program was begun. The Task Force applied for and received a 501c(3) non-profit incorporation and the temporary emergency shelter was opened July 18, 1988, with a trained staff and supportive community behind it.

Today,  The Haven boasts 18 staff members and 8 programs serving victims in a nine-county area, including Lowndes, Brooks, Colquitt, Echols, Berrien, Cook, Lanier, Clinch and Atkinson counties, in South Georgia. Thanks to continuing courage and efforts of local volunteers who comprise the Board of Directors, The Haven remains an important resource for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
